The Irish legend of the Children of Lir dates back centuries. Lir was the king of one of the earliest tribes to inhabit the Emerald Isle. He and his beloved Queen had four children whom they loved very much. When his wife suddenly passed away, Lir married his wife's sister, Aoife (a powerful sorceress), so that the children would have a loving mother. However, Aoife was so intensely jealous of Lir's intense love for his four children that she turned the four children into white swans, the like of which had not been in Ireland before or since. Belleek's Swan Votive evokes the magic, love, passion and beauty of the Legend of Lir. Delicately embossed feathers waver in the wind as this swan glides around the lake. Delicately intertwined shamrocks are hand-painted on the swan's sides to evoke the Irish countryside.
