Description

The Claymore is probably the most famous type of Scottish sword. A Claymore, or claidheamh-mòr (‘great sword’) was a heavy two-handed battle sword, favoured in Scotland, and especially the Highlands, from the later middle ages. It was characterised by its great size and forward sloping arms. The ends of those arms were often decorated with quatrefoil finials, which was a distinctive Scottish piece of embellishment. Emerging during the Wars of Independence, these mighty weapons would see use until about the time of the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689. The average Claymore was about 5’8” tall – as tall as most men of the time. The largest ever made was 7’3” which can be seen in the National War Museum in Edinburgh. Premium quality hand finished pewter kilt pin, plated in Antique Silver. The kilt pin is worn on the front of a kilt to prevent it lifting, although this can also be worn as a large statement brooch in its own right. Cast and finished in Glasgow, Scotland.
