I love jewellery!"
Since childhood Elena has been designing, making and mending jewellery and it is a great passion and pleasure in her life.
She loves intricacy, detail, delicacy and graceful flowing forms and aims to instill this in each and every piece of jewellery that she creates, and her work is very figurative, sinuous and full of movement. The amazing intricacies of Celtic metalsmiths, early illuminated Irish manuscripts, the art of ancient Rome, and the wonderful Art Nouveau & Art Deco periods have all had a strong influence on her work.
Elena was born in County Roscommon, and growing up close to a river in the West of Ireland, swirls and flowing lines have always featured strongly in her work. She studied fine Craft Design Jewellery at the University of Ulster, Belfast, and at the Sir John Cass College, London.
Most of Elena's pieces start out in wax first, so they are very three-dimensional, as she is really a sculptor at heart. Her pieces are cast into precious metals and then hand finished and transformed by her very special team at the Jewellery Studio, in Co. Cavan.
Early in her career Elena worked as a jewellery designer & master pattern maker for many in the jewellery trade in Dublin, which was a fantastic experience, as she had no idea from one week to the next what project would come through the door.
Different collections include, 'Gossamer'; light sterling silver petals accented with snow white freshwater pearls. Swans, angels, feathers and halos, flowers, butterflies and bees. Gorgeous gemstone set rings, and a cheeky cow called Daisy who sports a 9ct gold flower in her hair.
Recently Elena has also worked with the 'National Museum of Ireland' to create two jewellery collections based on their artifacts, which are on sale in the Museum shop, Kildare Street, Dublin.
Stories feature strongly in her work, with the Irish legend 'Children of Lir' being the most popular. The 'Mise Éire' collection lets you create your own Irish story. An upcoming 'Gráinne Mhaoil' collection, will be based on the medieval Irish pirate Queen Grace O’Malley and 'Oops a Daisy' is a charming old world walk down memory lane, with bees buzzing in the air all around.
Angels are ever popular and the 'My Angel' collection, has something for all those special times in life when words are not enough .
Elena is married to Teagasc dairy adviser David Colbourne, and together they have 5 children, ranging in age from 17 years down to 10 years. Her jewellery studio / workshop is 2 miles from Cavan town. Visitors welcome, but please ring first.
Elena's beautiful jewellery is hand made in County Cavan, and carries the Dublin Castle assay mark of purity, Guaranteed made in Ireland.
